Spy Pigeons

Belgian volunteers with baskets of pigeons were parachuted behind enemy lines to spy on German troops and send messages back to the Allies. But they weren’t always keen to jump out of the plane, so planes were designed where the pilot pulled a lever, automatically dropping the man and his feathered friends.

5. The Somme

The Somme, France, 20th June 1916

I’m back in France. A huge number of troops are moving up to the Front near the River Somme. There’s a big push coming, but the commanders are trying to keep it secret from Jerry. I’ve been bringing up ammunition for the big guns and bullets by the thousand, carrying boxes forward from the reserve trenches. The trench system here is so big that the trenches have names to stop folk from getting lost, but you can’t read the signs when it’s dark. We’re well back from the front line at the moment, but how long will that last?
